THE CHALLENGE
At Plooksook Farm, rising temperatures created a challenging environment for growing kale. As a crop that thrives in cooler conditions, kale became increasingly difficult to maintain, leading to reduced quality and frequent crop loss.
High temperatures placed significant stress on the crops, disrupting their growth cycle and making consistent production difficult. To manage the heat, farmers relied on manually spraying water throughout the day to cool the plants.
However, this approach presented several issues:
-
It required constant physical effort
-
Cooling was inconsistent and temporary
-
Water usage was inefficient
-
Valuable time was taken away from other farming task
This made it clear that a more reliable and sustainable solution was needed.
OUR SOLUTION
To address this, we designed and implemented an automatic misting system that responds directly to temperature changes in the environment.
The system activates only when necessary, ensuring that crops receive cooling at the right time without relying on manual intervention.
The system operates through a simple but effective process:
-
Temperature sensors continuously monitor the environment
-
When temperatures exceed a set threshold, the system is triggered
-
A fine mist is released to lower the surrounding temperature
-
Two growing sections are cooled evenly for consistent results
This creates a more stable microclimate for the crops.
